Path of Exile Item Upgrading

Item upgrading allows players to improve their weapons and equipment with new affixes, boosting the base stats of the item or adding additional perks. To upgrade an item, the player needs to have it in their inventory and have access to the kiln.

Usually objects with weak bases (like rings) can be upgraded to a more powerful base, whereas items with strong bases like Eth titans don't change much in their stats after being upgraded.

Upgrade components

Upgrade components can be slotted into weapons, armor, trinkets and gathering tools, providing an attribute bonus or extra effect while the equipment is in use. They can be purchased from vendors, found as loot by enemies, or received from missions and chests. Certain upgrades come with additional cosmetic effects. Most upgrades require that the equipment be at a specific level to upgrade.

To upgrade the quality of a weapon, armor or other item in the game, the player will have to select it and then click the Upgrade button in the toolbar. The preview will appear on the right side of the screen that shows what the expected upgrade statistics will be as well as the element or material required to complete the upgrade.

There are three types of upgrade components that are universal upgrades, prefix upgrades, and suffix upgrades. Universal upgrades, which are made up of gems, can be placed in any type of equipment and offer less bonuses than upgrade components that are type-restricted. Infusions are only placed in ascended gear and legendary equipment, are the same as jewels but have higher bonuses and cannot be placed in any other equipment. If a player upgrades a gathering tool, and then replaces the glyphs by a different one the previous one will be returned to their inventory. However replacing any other upgrade component will destroy it, with the exception of inscriptions which can be freely swapped.

Leveling

Path of Exile's upgrade process is different from the previous versions in a few key ways. Gear is now categorised in tracks, and each item can be upgraded as many times before it is "leveled out." The costs for upgrading increase with each level, however the materials required for upgrades do not. This procedure can take as long as two hours and will cost the same amount of materials. However it has a lower success rate.

To determine the height of a building engineers employ an instrument to compare the measurement to an established reference point such as a benchmark or the elevation of the ground. Rerolling

The game allows players to recycle upgraded items, which can be used to earn reroll tokens. These tokens can be used to upgrade the original item, or to upgrade another item of the same type. Recyclable items have a gauge that shows the level of upgrade. The rarity and the cost of upgrading an item upgrader determines the amount of level that has been filled.

Prior to this, certain upgrade items were given priority affixes that made them easier to roll. This meant that you could be able to get the stats that were important most to your build more often than other items.
